Lazio Women have been ordered to compensate former midfielder Maja Gothberg after CAS found the club unlawfully ended her employment because of pregnancy. The ruling also awarded moral damages and cited disclosure of confidential pregnancy information.

FIFPro called the case groundbreaking because it reinforces maternity protections even where contract terms were not fully formalised. Gothberg said pregnancy should never be treated as a problem or reason to deny labour opportunities in football.

Swansea City great and former Wales international Herbie Williams has died aged 85. Williams made 608 appearances for Swansea, scored 129 goals and remains third on the club’s all-time league appearance list following a decorated one-club career.

Swansea said they were deeply saddened by the loss of one of their most loyal servants. Williams joined the club as a teenager in 1955 and later helped them reach the 1963-64 FA Cup semi-finals.

Manchester United have secured a key land deal needed for their planned 100,000-seat stadium near Old Trafford. The project is now expected to open before 2035 rather than the previously discussed 2030 target for fans.

The club acquired a 25-acre triangle of land from Indurent, allowing design work to resume. Foster + Partners are leading the plans, while United want the £2bn venue to become a major global sports hub.

Wales manager Craig Bellamy is in advanced talks with Burnley over becoming their new head coach. Burnley have approached the Football Association of Wales and are prepared to meet his compensation clause if a final agreement is reached.

The move would take Bellamy back to Turf Moor after his previous assistant role under Vincent Kompany. It would also force Wales into another search, with Steve Cooper and Rob Edwards named as possible successors.

Footage appeared to show England full-back Djed Spence not shaking hands with Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey before kick-off. Partey was also booed by England fans during his first World Cup appearance of the tournament.

BBC Sport reported the FA had not discussed handshakes with players before the game. Partey, who denies criminal charges in the UK, was admitted to the United States after missing Ghana’s opener in Canada.

Kenny Miller has been appointed permanent head coach of Maccabi Tel Aviv after leading them to victory in the Israeli State Cup final. The former Scotland striker has signed a one-year deal with an option.

Miller stepped up after Ronny Deila left in May and will be assisted by Stuart Taylor. Maccabi finished third last season and expect improvement under a coach who already understands the club’s standards.

Iran have been allowed to enter the United States two days before their Seattle match against Egypt, giving them an extra day beyond earlier restrictions. They must still leave for their Tijuana base after the game.

The change follows Iran’s complaints to FIFA over unfair travel conditions. Coach Amir Ghalenoei had argued the previous 24-hour entry window reduced preparation time and left his squad at a disadvantage.

FIFA gave Miguel Almiron a one-match ban for covering his mouth during a confrontation and stripped Paraguayan commentator Jorge Vera of World Cup credentials after his on-air rant over the red card.

Almiron will miss Paraguay’s decisive group game against Australia, but the ban was not extended. Vera apologised after calling FIFA and officials thieves, with his accreditation reportedly cancelled for the tournament.

Durham Women’s future has been secured after South Shields co-owner Geoff Thompson agreed to acquire a majority shareholding, with support from Jason Ye. The deal keeps Durham in Women’s Super League 2 next season.

The club had issued an urgent takeover appeal after potential investors fell through. Thompson said the priority was safeguarding Durham’s long-term future, while the founders will remain involved as shareholders.
