Security concerns in Saudi Arabia have disrupted AFC Champions League scheduling and raised questions about the 2027 Asian Cup. Al-Nassr have rested Cristiano Ronaldo for their away match against Pakhtakor after a previous continental fixture was postponed.
Al-Wasl declined to travel to Riyadh for last week’s match against Al-Nassr, while an earlier home fixture was delayed following reports of missile attacks. Al-Nassr coach Ange Postecoglou cited fixture congestion and travel demands when explaining Ronaldo’s absence. Japan’s football federation has raised safety concerns about the Asian Cup, scheduled to begin on 7 January. AFC officials say they may assess postponement options by the end of November, while Saudi organisers maintain preparations are continuing.
Why It Matters
Security disruptions could force changes to Asia's continental club calendar and the 2027 Asian Cup.
