CAF has reversed its decision to stage the Africa Cup of Nations every four years, restoring the traditional two-year cycle. The governing body previously announced plans to replace biennial AFCON tournaments with an African Nations League.

CAF acknowledged that the proposed Nations League would require several years to become financially self-sufficient. President Patrice Motsepe said restoring AFCON’s regular schedule would benefit African football and its 54 member associations. The next editions are planned for 2027, 2028, 2031 and 2033, with no tournament in 2030.

Why It Matters

African football retains its frequent continental championship, but clubs could face more regular player absences.
