Kansas City Current defeated Angel City 1-0 in the NWSL quarterfinals through a disputed penalty in extra time. Michelle Cooper converted the decisive spot-kick to send Kansas City into the semifinals.
Referee Alexandra Billeter awarded a penalty after Angel City goalkeeper Angelina Anderson and midfielder Ary Borges made contact with Kayla Sharples during a corner. Cooper scored in the 96th minute. Angel City’s coaching staff criticised the decision, arguing the contact was insufficient for a penalty. Kansas City defended the officiating process, while Angel City acknowledged missed attacking opportunities.
