Egypt Football Association, Hossam Hassan, Ali Maher and Mohamed Salah
7 November 2026
Egypt have dismissed national-team manager Hossam Hassan and appointed Ali Maher as his replacement, less than two months after extending Hassan’s contract until 2030.
Egyptian Football Association board member Mustafa Abu Zahra confirmed the decision followed an assessment of the atmosphere surrounding the national team. He rejected claims that captain Mohamed Salah influenced the dismissal, stating it was entirely a board decision. Maher, previously in charge of Ceramica Cleopatra, will prepare Egypt for two Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Malawi in November.
Why It Matters
Egypt change managers shortly before important AFCON qualifiers despite recently committing to Hassan through 2030.
