Aston Villa, Visit Rwanda and Amnesty International UK
Tuesday
Aston Villa have been warned that their new £20m-a-year Visit Rwanda shirt sponsorship could be used for sportswashing. The tourist board will replace Betano on the front of the men’s, women’s and academy shirts in a multi-year deal.
Amnesty International UK raised concerns over Rwanda’s human-rights record and alleged role in the DR Congo conflict. Villa called the agreement the most important sponsorship in club history, while the partnership follows scrutiny of similar deals across European football.
