Manchester United, Michael Carrick and Bruno Fernandes
23 October 2026
Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has refused to guarantee Bruno Fernandes a starting place against Bournemouth after the captain publicly criticised his tactics following the 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como.
Asked whether Fernandes could be dropped or stripped of the captaincy, Carrick said he would make decisions based on the club’s interests but declined to discuss any private conversations. United had earlier indicated that Fernandes would remain captain and face no disciplinary action. Carrick rejected suggestions that the dressing room was divided despite growing criticism of the team’s performances.
Why It Matters
United could face Bournemouth without their captain as pressure grows on Carrick.
