Real Madrid have submitted what UEFA described as a substantial dossier concerning Barcelona’s payments to former Spanish refereeing official Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira. The material reportedly exceeds 50,000 pages and forms part of UEFA’s continuing review of the case.

UEFA’s ethics and disciplinary inspectors will assess the new documentation, while Barcelona maintain the payments were for refereeing reports and deny wrongdoing. The club said UEFA has not opened new proceedings and that the existing investigation has never formally closed.

Lionel Messi and CD Eldense

Lionel Messi has completed his purchase of Spanish second-division club CD Eldense, subject to regulatory approval. The acquisition makes Eldense the second Spanish club owned by the former Barcelona forward following his investment in Cornella earlier this year.

Messi had reached a preliminary agreement to become Eldense’s majority shareholder in September. The Alicante club described the takeover as the start of a long-term sporting and institutional project while it sits 19th in Spain’s 22-team second division.

Cove Rangers and the SPFL

Cove Rangers have been placed under a player-registration embargo until 31 May 2027 after admitting breaches involving an overdue contractual payment and incorrect information supplied to the Scottish Professional Football League about outstanding player liabilities.

An SPFL tribunal also fined the League One club £5,000, with £2,000 suspended. Cove have since paid the player involved but described the sanction as severe and are reviewing the ruling and their available options.

Ivan Toney

England striker Ivan Toney has pleaded not guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm following an alleged confrontation at a London nightclub last December. He is accused of headbutting and punching another man during the incident in Soho.

Toney chose to have the case heard before a judge and jury rather than remain in the magistrates court. He was released on unconditional bail and is due to appear at Southwark Crown Court on 29 October.

Newcastle United and their supporters

Newcastle United have unveiled a redesigned club crest following a two-year consultation process involving supporters. More than 27,000 fans voted on the final design, which retains the castle, striped shield and hippocampi from the club’s existing identity.

The refreshed badge will begin appearing across Newcastle’s digital platforms before making its competitive shirt debut at the club’s final home game of this season. It will then become the permanent playing crest from the 2027-28 campaign.

Fulham manager Alvaro Arbeloa has been charged with misconduct by the Football Association after comments questioning officials following his side’s 1-1 Premier League draw with Manchester United. The FA alleges his remarks implied bias and questioned a match official’s integrity.

Arbeloa claimed officials would not allow Manchester United to lose after Matheus Cunha’s late equaliser at Craven Cottage. The Fulham manager has been given until Thursday to respond to the charge before the disciplinary process moves forward.

Manchester City sponsor Etihad Airways is considering legal action following publication of the Premier League commission’s findings. The airline rejected any suggestion it participated in improper commercial arrangements and said the public handling of the case had damaged its interests.

Etihad said it was not given an opportunity to engage with the process and criticised what it described as unclear and selective disclosure. The airline will seek legal advice on possible recourse while Manchester City separately prepares its own appeal.

Iliyan Filipov and Botev Plovdiv

Botev Plovdiv owner Iliyan Filipov was shot dead in the Bulgarian city of Plovdiv early Wednesday. Police later arrested a 51-year-old former employee of Filipov’s transport and construction company as the investigation into the killing continued.

Officers were called to the Hristo Smirnenski district at about 1am local time and secured the area before launching a wider search. Botev cancelled training, supporters gathered at Hristo Botev Stadium and the club began seeking a new date for its Slavia Sofia match.

Bordeaux and Park Bench

Girondins de Bordeaux have agreed to change ownership for a symbolic €1, with buyer Park Bench taking on the historic French club’s debts. The agreement offers Bordeaux a route away from the financial crisis that threatened their continued existence.

Gerard Lopez’s company will relinquish control if the transaction clears its remaining regulatory steps. Park Bench must now appear before the Nouvelle-Aquitaine league’s financial control commission, with approval required to secure Bordeaux’s place in Regional 1.
