Morocco beat Haiti 4-2 in Atlanta to reach the round of 32 as Group C runners-up behind Brazil. Coach Mohamed Ouahbi then urged his players to believe they can become the first African winners of the World Cup.

Morocco’s win secured a knockout match against the winners of Group F in Monterrey. Ouahbi said his side have the ingredients to beat anyone, drawing confidence from their 2022 semi-final run and current tournament momentum.

Switzerland and Canada.

Switzerland beat Canada 2-1 in Vancouver to win Group B and deny the co-hosts home advantage in the knockouts. Ruben Vargas and Johan Manzambi scored after half-time before Promise David pulled one back late on.

Canada needed only a draw to stay in Vancouver for the next round but must now travel to Los Angeles. Jesse Marsch said Alphonso Davies should be fit for their round-of-32 tie, likely against South Korea.

Portugal beat Uzbekistan 5-0 in Houston, with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring twice to answer criticism after the opening draw with DR Congo. The result ended Uzbekistan’s World Cup hopes and put Portugal back on course in Group K.

Ronaldo’s goals made him the first male player to score in six different World Cups, while Fabio Cannavaro praised his intelligence after the match. Portugal now regain control before a decisive group finish against Colombia.

Colombia booked a World Cup last-32 place with a 1-0 win over DR Congo in Guadalajara. Daniel Munoz scored the decisive 76th-minute goal, giving Colombia six points from two Group K matches so far overall.

Goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi kept DR Congo alive with several saves before Munoz finally broke through. Colombia now face Portugal to decide the group winner, while DR Congo must recover against Uzbekistan in their finale.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice as Portugal beat Uzbekistan 5-0, becoming the first player to score in six World Cups. Nuno Mendes, a Uzbekistan own goal and Rafael Leao also struck as Portugal bounced back from their opening draw.

Ronaldo’s early half-volley and first-half second answered heavy criticism after the DR Congo result. Portugal now face Colombia to decide Group K, while Roberto Martinez praised Ronaldo’s leadership through a difficult week.

England and Ghana.

England were held to a 0-0 draw by Ghana, missing the chance to move closer to securing top spot. Thomas Tuchel’s side controlled possession but struggled to create clear chances for most of the match.

Bukayo Saka, Nico O’Reilly and Harry Kane went closest late on, but Ghana survived the pressure. The result leaves Group L open heading into the final round, with England still seeking attacking rhythm.

Norway and Erling Haaland.

Norway booked their place in the knockout stage after beating Senegal 3-2, with Erling Haaland scoring twice. The players celebrated with supporters by joining the viral Viking Row routine inside MetLife Stadium.

Haaland now has four goals in two World Cup games and continues to drive Norway’s historic run. Their final group match against France will decide top spot, although Haaland played down talk of title contention.

Kylian Mbappe scored twice as France beat Iraq 3-0 and secured a place in the knockout stage. The match in Philadelphia was delayed for more than two hours because of thunder and lightning.

Mbappe moved level with Miroslav Klose on 16 World Cup goals, while Ousmane Dembele added France’s third. The result sets up a final group match against Norway to decide first place.

Lionel Messi became the top scorer in World Cup history after netting twice in Argentina’s 2-0 victory over Austria. He missed an early penalty but recovered to move clear of Miroslav Klose on 18 goals.

Argentina secured qualification for the round of 32 with six points from two matches. Messi has scored all five of their goals so far, strengthening both his Golden Boot push and Argentina’s title defence.

Cape Verde and Uruguay

Cape Verde continued their surprise World Cup run by drawing 2-2 with Uruguay in Miami. Kevin Pina scored their first World Cup goal before Helio Varela’s second-half equaliser kept the debutants firmly in knockout contention.

Uruguay led through Maxi Araujo and Agustin Canobbio but failed to close the match, leaving Marcelo Bielsa’s side under pressure before facing Spain. Cape Verde can now qualify by getting a result against Saudi Arabia.
