FIFA Rewrites Contract Termination Rules From January

10 September 2026

FIFA will amend Article 17 from January to change how compensation is calculated when players or clubs terminate contracts unilaterally. The new framework aims to prevent exaggerated termination figures and make compensation decisions more transparent, objective and predictable across competitions.

Contracts with agreed termination clauses will generally use that figure unless it is clearly excessive, while agreements without one will be assessed using remaining wages, service value, transfer losses, replacement costs and other proven damages under the revised framework.
