Spain beat Portugal 1-0 to reach the World Cup quarter-finals, with substitute Mikel Merino scoring in stoppage time. The defeat ended Cristiano Ronaldo’s final World Cup campaign and left Portugal out in the last 16.
Ferran Torres slipped Merino through after a quick free kick, and the Arsenal midfielder finished past Diogo Costa. Spain kept another clean sheet, extended their defensive streak and will face either Belgium or the United States next.
