Real Madrid, Trent Alexander-Arnold, José Mourinho, Federico Valverde and Denzel Dumfries
1 November 2026
Trent Alexander-Arnold is struggling for playing time at Real Madrid after falling behind Federico Valverde and Denzel Dumfries in the right-back selection order. The England international has started just four of Madrid’s opening 13 matches this season.
Mourinho has increasingly preferred Valverde at right-back despite the Uruguayan’s usual midfield role. Alexander-Arnold did not feature against Roma, Sevilla or RB Leipzig and played only briefly in El Clásico. His limited opportunities have prompted speculation about a January departure, although no transfer agreement has been reported. The situation could also affect his chances of selection for England’s November internationals.
Why It Matters
Alexander-Arnold risks losing his Real Madrid place and weakening his England selection prospects.
