Mexico End 40-Year Knockout Wait

Mexico and Ecuador
Tuesday at Estadio Azteca

Mexico beat Ecuador 2-0 to win their first World Cup knockout match in 40 years. Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez scored in the first half after lightning delayed kick-off by one hour and sent the co-hosts through.

The co-hosts controlled the match in front of a loud Azteca crowd and finally ended seven straight exits at the first knockout hurdle. They now await England or DR Congo in the last 16 after a composed display.
