Coventry City, Sunderland, West Midlands Police and the Bradley Lowery Foundation
1 November 2026
West Midlands Police have opened an investigation after a video appeared to show a supporter mocking the memory of Bradley Lowery during Coventry’s Premier League match against Sunderland. A 14-year-old boy has presented himself to police.
The footage appeared to show someone displaying a photograph of Bradley, a Sunderland supporter who died from childhood cancer in 2017, in a taunting manner. Coventry condemned offensive behaviour and pledged cooperation with the authorities. Bradley’s mother, Gemma Lowery, expressed distress but asked that hatred not be directed towards the teenager. No legal finding has been announced.
Why It Matters
The investigation highlights the consequences of abusive supporter behaviour and the responsibility to protect families from harassment.
