Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has avoided bankruptcy after paying an outstanding tax debt to HM Revenue and Customs. A London court dismissed the bankruptcy petition against the 48-year-old former England international after confirmation that the amount owed had been settled.

Judge Nicholas Briggs dismissed the petition at the Insolvency and Companies Court on Tuesday. HMRC confirmed that payment had been received, although the amount was not disclosed during the hearing. Carragher, who retired in 2013, currently works as a football pundit.
