Aston Villa defeated Newcastle United 1-0 through a winning goal from 21-year-old midfielder Johan Manzambi. The Swiss international scored against the club he rejected during the summer transfer window, continuing his impressive start after joining Villa from Freiburg for a club-record fee exceeding £50 million.
Manzambi headed home a cross from Joao Gomes to secure the victory. It was his third goal for Villa, following strikes against Tottenham and Fenerbahce. The win extended Villa’s unbeaten run across all competitions to five matches and lifted them to 12th in the Premier League. Manager Unai Emery praised Manzambi’s intelligence, technical ability and physical qualities.
