NWSL Playoff Stadium Conflicts Could Force Gotham Into Smaller Venue

Gotham FC, San Diego Wave, Washington Spirit and the National Women’s Soccer League

NWSL Shield winners Gotham FC could be forced to host a potential playoff semifinal at a 5,000-seat stadium because their regular home ground is unavailable. Other leading playoff teams face similar scheduling conflicts.

ESPN obtained league documents showing that Gotham’s Sports Illustrated Stadium is booked for a New York Red Bulls friendly on 14 November. If Gotham and San Diego both advance, Gotham would host at Icahn Stadium instead. San Diego and Washington also face stadium conflicts. The league is considering alternative venues while trying to preserve home advantage and existing television windows. No semifinal venue decision has been finalised.

Why It Matters

Stadium conflicts threaten playoff attendance and highlight the importance of dedicated venues for professional women's football.
