English football regulator chairman David Kogan says he would resign if politicians attempted to interfere with the watchdog’s handling of Manchester City’s financial-rules case. His remarks follow concerns about possible political influence after Prime Minister Andy Burnham commented on the club’s ownership.

Kogan insisted the regulator would independently assess the evidence and apply its statutory powers after the ongoing appeal and disciplinary process. Those powers concern the suitability of owners, directors and senior executives. He stated that no politician had attempted to influence the regulator and declined to prejudge possible action against City.
