Egypt beat Australia 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw to win a World Cup knockout match for the first time. Mohamed Salah scored a Panenka, and Hossam Abdelmaguid converted the decisive kick for Egypt.

Australia’s late goalkeeper switch backfired as Mathew Ryan replaced Patrick Beach before the shootout but failed to save a penalty. Harry Souttar and 18-year-old Lucas Herrington missed, sending Egypt into a last-16 tie against Argentina.
