Newcastle United have condemned the “unacceptable” treatment of their travelling support in Marseille, claiming fans were indiscriminately assaulted by police using pepper spray, batons and shields after the 2-1 Champions League defeat and confirming they will file formal complaints with UEFA, Marseille and French authorities. The club say supporters patiently waited up to an hour in the away sector under an agreed phased-exit plan before officers suddenly blocked movement, triggering distress and crushing in the concourse, despite fans being in “good spirits” and under observation from Newcastle stewards and staff.
