Illinois beat VCU 76-55 to advance to the Sweet 16 for the second time in three seasons under Brad Underwood. The Illini used their size advantage, rebounding edge and disciplined defence to control the game after VCU lost Nyk Lewis to injury almost immediately. Andrej Stojakovic led Illinois with 21 points, while Tomislav Ivisic added a double-double and Keaton Wagler chipped in valuable support. Illinois held VCU to 35 percent shooting, dominated the glass 45-29 and now move on to face Houston in the South Region.
