Mexx Meerdink scored twice as the Netherlands beat Serbia 2-1 to secure their first victory under Xavi Hernandez. Meerdink converted a first-half penalty before scoring again after Luka Jovic had levelled immediately after the break.
The Netherlands controlled much of the match and regained the lead when Ruben van Bommel created Meerdink’s second goal. The win followed their opening draw with Germany, although Cody Gakpo left early with an ankle injury requiring further assessment.
