Ramon Vega and Gianni Infantino

Former Tottenham and Switzerland defender Ramon Vega has announced his intention to challenge Gianni Infantino in FIFA’s 2027 presidential election. He is the first person to publicly declare a challenge amid mounting criticism of FIFA’s governance and leadership.
Vega wants reforms following the controversy over FIFA’s abandoned World Cup investment proposal. His participation is not yet guaranteed because candidates must secure association backing and pass eligibility checks. Asian football chief Sheikh Salman has separately proposed an internally led governance review.
