FIFA secretary-general Mattias Grafstrom described the abandoned private-investment proposal as a sad and reproachable episode in an internal message to staff. He acknowledged the turmoil created inside the organisation and said the project had now been permanently abandoned.

Grafstrom said FIFA employees had been caught in events that were difficult to understand or accept. His message also stressed that institutions outlast individuals, signalling internal unease while attempting to reassure staff about the organisation’s future and continuity.
