Matthijs de Ligt and Manchester United

Matthijs de Ligt is back in training at Manchester United after nearly a year without competitive football because of a persistent back injury. Medical staff expect the defender to become available for selection after the current international break following surgery in May.
De Ligt first suffered the back problem in November 2025 and underwent surgery after six months of unsuccessful conservative treatment. Netherlands coach Xavi remains in contact with United over his recovery, while a successful return would put him back into contention for future national-team squads.
