Three-time Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmati has undergone surgery on a transverse fracture of her left fibula, ruling her out for about five months and ending any hope of featuring in Spain’s Nations League decider against Germany in Madrid. Injured in training before the second leg, she returned to Barcelona for an operation overseen by Dr Antoni Dalmau and the club’s medical staff, leaving Barca without their main playmaker for a packed schedule and putting her availability for key Champions League knockout ties in serious doubt.
