Cristian Romero has officially completed his transfer from Tottenham to Atletico Madrid after the clubs confirmed the move. Atletico will reportedly pay €35m plus another €5m in variables, and the Argentina centre-back has signed a five-year contract.

The completion ends Romero’s five-year Tottenham spell after 156 appearances and converts the previously agreed transfer into a permanent move. He joins Diego Simeone after Tottenham authorised his departure and had already strengthened central defence with two summer additions.

Middlesbrough have officially signed Tottenham defender Ashley Phillips on a five-year contract. The England Under-21 international arrives for an initial reported fee of £7m, with performance-related additions potentially increasing the total package to around £20m.

Phillips leaves Tottenham without making a competitive senior appearance but brings extensive Championship experience from loan spells. Middlesbrough make him their eighth summer signing as Kim Hellberg strengthens a squad aiming to challenge again after losing last season’s play-off final.

Crystal Palace have officially signed Israel international Anan Khalaili from Union Saint-Gilloise on a contract running through 2031. The Eagles reportedly paid £21m for the versatile 21-year-old, who can operate as either a winger or full-back.

Khalaili arrives after helping Union win their first Belgian league title in 90 years and brings Champions League experience into Palace’s Europa League campaign. He becomes Pierre Sage’s fifth addition during an active summer rebuild at Selhurst Park.

Newcastle United, Benfica and Amar Dedic

Newcastle are in advanced talks with Benfica over a move for Bosnia-Herzegovina right-back Amar Dedic, who is valued at around £30m. The 23-year-old previously worked under Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle during their time together at Red Bull Salzburg.

Newcastle need another right-back after Kieran Trippier’s departure and with Tino Livramento still recovering from injury. Negotiations are progressing sufficiently for Dedic to potentially be available for the Premier League opener against Liverpool if the clubs complete an agreement.

Cristian Romero has publicly confirmed his Tottenham departure with a farewell message as he prepares to join Atletico Madrid. The Spanish club have agreed a £34.2m fee for the Argentina centre-back, with Tottenham retaining a 15% future sell-on clause.

Romero leaves after five seasons and 156 appearances, having captained Tottenham and helped end their 17-year trophy drought with the 2025 Europa League. His statement acknowledged imperfections but said he always defended the club with pride and commitment.
