Washington Spirit secured their place in the National Women’s Soccer League playoffs with a 1-0 victory over Gotham FC. The result prevented Gotham from clinching the NWSL Shield and ended the visitors’ four-match unbeaten run.
Defender Lucia Di Guglielmo scored her first NWSL goal in the 70th minute after receiving a pass from Melissa Bethi. Goalkeeper Sandy MacIver recorded her tenth clean sheet of the season. Trinity Rodman remains Washington’s leading attacking contributor with 11 goals and eight assists. Gotham must wait for another opportunity to secure the regular-season title.
